Minister of Justice and National Integration, Attorney-at-Law Hon. Harshana Nanayakkara stated that building a disciplined, ethical, and law-abiding future generation through historical educational institutions is paramount, and the government remains fully committed to uplifting educational infrastructure to support this cause.
The Minister made these remarks while addressing the 150th-anniversary celebration of Prince of Wales’ College and Princess of Wales’ College in Moratuwa on September 14, 2026.
Founded in 1876 under the vision of philanthropist Sir Charles Henry de Soysa, the twin institutions have produced prominent legal luminaries—including former Chief Justices of Sri Lanka—alongside diplomats, engineers, and national leaders over their 150-year legacy.
Highlighting the legal and institutional impact of the schools, Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara remarked,
"These institutions have produced stalwarts who have served our legal system and judicial framework with utmost integrity. Remembering that legacy here today, among current and former legal minds, is a privilege. The motto of this college reminds us that true progress takes place step-by-step through consistent effort rather than sudden leaps. The foundation of a just and law-abiding society is built within such disciplined educational environments."
Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, who attended as the Chief Guest, reiterated the government’s commitment to educational reforms,
"Our goal as a government is to invest in human resource development and create a learning environment that nurtures future leaders capable of driving qualitative social change."
To mark this historic milestone, a commemorative stamp, first-day cover, and souvenir volume were officially presented during the ceremony.
The event was attended by the British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, H.E. Andrew Patrick, Principal of Prince of Wales’ College Captain Wasantha Kumara Waduge, Principal of Princess of Wales’ College Mrs. Thilini Wijeweera, alongside senior Ministry officials, alumni, educators, and students.
